Protecting the Past,
Creating the Future
You’re probably not thrilled about needing an archaeologist. We get it. Archaeology has been seen as a sort of necessary evil.
At Ground Truth Archaeology & Heritage Services, we believe that’s no longer the case. Archaeology is impacting communities today, and it offers so much opportunity for us, our clients, and our Indigenous brothers and sisters.
Our mission is to put archaeology and heritage resource management back into the hands of the people who own the heritage of western Canada through education, training, consultation, and funding—all while offering high-quality archaeology and heritage services.
As a small operation, we don’t have the high overhead of the big environmental companies. But we do have the flexibility to handle your project no matter the scope. And we’re great to work with!
Are You a Fit?
If you’re breaking new ground, you’re a potential client. We work with a broad range of companies, many of which are in the energy, infrastructure, agriculture, and forestry sectors across western Canada.
But we don’t work with just anyone. You’re a fit if you’re interested in cultural insight and truth and reconciliation. Of course you want to make money off your project, and we’re committed to getting the job done on time and budget. But you also appreciate that we don’t cut corners financially—or with people.
Here’s what we can promise you:
We don’t know what we’re going to find, and we recognize that’s no fun for you. But we’ll be upfront and tell you what you can expect from government regulators based on our experience and knowledge of known sites. If mitigation is required, we’ll be honest about what’s needed and work with you and the First Nation communities to ensure the public knows the good work you’re doing for our Indigenous brothers and sisters.
Building Capacity for First Nations
If you’re still reading, you’re interested in supporting western Canada’s First Nation communities. Great! That’s what we’re all about.
Our work includes providing training opportunities to Indigenous people interested in doing archaeology, historical research, and laboratory work. We are also planning to help nations set up their own archaeology businesses, giving them control over the management of their own heritage.
We are sensitive to cultural differences and work with people in a way that works for them. Consultation with communities is not one and done. We keep going back until all parties have the necessary information, creating trusting relationships that result in more opportunity for everyone.
As part of consultation, we work with First Nations to find out how we can tell their story in the best way possible, and how it can add to truth and reconciliation on a larger scale. This reflects positively on our clients and brings the general public into closer connection with Indigenous communities.
